The U.S. Postal Service has revealed that postmark dates are not a guarantee of when something is mailed, and that mail, including ballots, may not receive a postmark on the same day it’s dropped off. This revelation is a sign of increasing public distrust in the democratic process of choosing leaders. The Supreme Court's upcoming decision in Watson v. RNC could eliminate post-election day ballot receipt periods, encourage timely Election Day results, and shift the country away from the use of mail-in ballots. However, states that allow mail-In ballots to arrive after Election Day generally rely on postmarking dates to determine whether a ballot can be counted. This change could cause major issues in states with weak election administration laws, such as Florida, Ohio, Texas, and others. The authors argue that states must lead the way on election administration reforms that prioritize speed, simplicity, and simplicity in their elections. They also suggest that states should prioritise security measures and eliminate grace periods that invite post-Election Day mischief.
