Director Blake Edwards had planned to remake The Music Box, an Oscar-winning short film by Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, with Burt Reynolds. The film, which was added to the National Film Registry in 1997, was about to be adapted into a modern adaptation of the film. However, the film was not made and did not follow the storyline it was expected to. Instead, it was released in 1986 and was a box-office flop.
