Dyane Wade, a former NBA star, has spoken about his personal experiences, including raising a trans child and raising a child who came out as transgender. The documentary "The Dads," directed by Emmy-winning filmmaker Luchina Fisher, follows fathers of transgender and gender-expansive children as they navigate a rapidly shifting political climate amid rising hostility towards trans people across the US. The film, which is set to premiere at South by Southwest, offers a unique perspective on masculinity and parenting from a rarely seen on screen perspective. The urgency behind the film's premise is heightened due to new laws affecting transgender Americans emerging in the U.S. In Kansas, a recently enacted law invalidates driver’s licenses and birth certificates that reflect transgender residents’ gender identities and requires new documents listing the sex assigned at birth. The feature version of The Dads was supported by Elevate Studios, the storytelling arm of the Elevate Prize Foundation, and the Ali Forney Center, the nation’ largest nonprofit serving LGBTQ homeless youth.
