The market share of EV vehicles in the US fell from 10.5% to 5.7% after the Trump administration cancelled a $7,500 EV tax credit in September, but other EV markets, including China and Europe, are expanding. As electricity systems become more flexible to integrate decentralised sources of renewable energy, EV car batteries could become a significant role in helping households and electricity grids balance supply and demand. However, some question whether participating in V2G projects will be as popular with drivers as they would otherwise benefit from the benefits from V2H. The potential of car batteries to contribute to grid flexibility will be considerable, according to Vincent Bellone, product management and strategy leader at Schneider eStar. UK firm Octopus Energy currently manages the single direction charging of over 350,000 cars in the UK, with almost half of new cars sold either EV or hybrid. However there are several barriers to overcome, including a compatible bidirectional charger and safety requirements for the installation and installation of a compatible device, and regulatory framework for V2X, and simpler metering and grid settlement arrangements, and changes to regulatory frameworks.
