AARP has released a report detailing the cost of unpaid family caregiving in the United States, which accounted for over $1 trillion in economic value during 2024. The study found that while most family caregivers provided care worth over $1000 trillion, they received no compensation. The report also revealed that the average wage for one caregiving hour jumped from $16.59 to $20.41 in 2024, reflecting rising home care costs and higher direct care wages nationwide. If family care were counted as a formal industry, it would rank among the largest and most valuable labor forces in the entire American economy. Nearly half of family caregivers report experiencing at least one negative financial impact due to their caregiving responsibilities. The financial impact on these households can be seen from using up personal savings, taking on debt, leaving bills unpaid, and being unable to afford basic necessities like food.
