Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla's "Full Self-Driving" software (FSD v15), has promised that the next version of the software will "far exceed human levels of safety" and achieve what every previous version was supposed to achieve. This is not the first time Musk has made similar promises about Version 12 in 2023 and V14 in 2025, but neither of these came close to delivering. The claim was made in response to a user's review of FSD v14.3 after 600+ miles of testing. The gap between Musk's claims of superhuman safety and Tesla's actual safety performance remains significant. Tesla's safety comparisons suffer from fundamental methodological issues such as road-type mismatch, vehicle-age mismatch, driver demographic differences, and different crash definitions than NHTSA uses. NHPSA has upgraded its investigation into FSD's inability to handle reduced visibility conditions to cover 3.2 million vehicles and is also investigating FSD traffic violations.
