The Senate has opened debate on the SAVE America Act, a voter ID bill that could make voting harder for millions. The bill requires Americans to register to vote with documentary proof of citizenship, in most cases a birth certificate or passport, and has little chance in the Senate unless Republicans kill the cloture rule that requires 60 votes to end debate. However, Sen. John Thune, the party's leader, is opposed to dismantling the Senate rules to pass the bill. The last time senators tried to end the filibuster was in 2022, but Democrats led the charge. The Center for Justice's voting director, Sean MoralesDoyle, argues that removing the filibuster gives too much power to make reforms without being stymied by the minority.
