Epic Games, a Cary-based video game developer, is laying off over 1,000 employees due to a decrease in engagement in its most popular game, Fortnite. The layoffs were announced by Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney, who stated that the company was seeking $500 million in savings. This is not the first time the company has laid off workers; in 2023, it laid off nearly 900 workers due to the decline in Fortnitty's popularity. The company's response to the layoffs was not immediately available. Despite Fortnify's success, Epic Games has faced challenges over the years including weaker consumer spending and competition from other forms of entertainment.
