Murder of Cerina Fairfax underscores risks of intimate partner violence women face daily

Lisette Johnson, former Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax, was shot to death by his wife of 21 years, before turning the gun on himself. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 4 women in the U.S. will experience physical violence from an intimate partner at some point in their lifetime. The Bureau of Justice Statistics also shows that women are more likely to be killed by someone they know than by a stranger. The Domestic Violence Intervention Program suggests that women 70 times more likely than to be murdered when trying to separate from their partners, and that firearm presence in the home increases the risk by nearly 500%.
