Local farmers deal with impact of higher fuel costs, shipping prices

The rising cost of gas is impacting local farmers like Hickory Ridge Farm in Chesapeake, Virginia. The family-owned operation has seen challenges since opening back up for the season, mainly due to the cost of diesel fuel for the tractors and hayrides they run daily. The cost of shipping has also increased, with co-owner John Pierce stating they will absorb the increase and work through it. The farm has also had to increase its strawberry price slightly to compensate for an increased projection into their vegetable crops and will need to buy more expensive fertilizer for their pumpkin season and upcoming crops.
