Connecticut restaurants fight to reclaim meals tax money promised for tourism

Connecticut's tourism budget has been slashed, but there are plans to utilise the money from a meals tax that was supposed to promote the state but is instead going to the state's budget. The meal tax, which was intended to aid cities and towns, has been allocated to the general fund since 2019, generating over $500 million. The original intent was to aid in promoting tourism in the city or town where the tax was generated. The Connecticut Restaurant and Hospitality Association is leading efforts to reclaim this money. However, the huge amount of money the meals tax brings in may be difficult to give back.
