The Saudi royals have donated $51.6 million to the National Zoo, marking the largest donation ever to the zoo. The gift is part of a 15-year Smithsonian effort to save the Arabian Leopard from extinction. The donation surpasses the $24 million given by panda patron David Rubenstein. The leopard habitat will be located next to the panda house and undergoes a hearing on its design at the National Capital Planning Commission. The gesture is seen as part of Saudi Arabia's efforts to improve its image in Washington after the 2018 killing of Jamal Khashoggi.
