The Republicans hoping to win in Utah’s new ‘blue’ district

After a Utah court approved a new congressional map, a Republican primary in the new 1st District, covering northern two-thirds of Salt Lake County, is wide open. Three Republicans have announced a bid for the seat, including Riley Owen, Dave Robinson and Jonathan Lopez, while eight Democrats are gathering signatures for a run. The race is seen as crucial for Republicans to win due to the tight power balance in the U.S. House of Representatives. Owen's campaign has received endorsements from Utah Attorney General Derek Brown, former national security adviser to Utah President Robert O'Brien. Since 2018, 56% of CD1 residents have supported Democratic candidates.
