Latino politician asked to repeat himself ‘in English’ — while speaking English

Councilor Juan Carlos González, the first Latino person to serve on Metro Council, was asked to repeat himself in English during a work session by Councilor Mary Nolan, a Democratic former state lawmaker. These comments, which can constitute microaggressions, were later referred to as "harsh in tone and dismissive in substance" by Deputy Council President Duncan Hwang. Gonzáz, who had been speaking in English, responded by saying he would give more thought and sensitivity to his comments in the future. Nolan delivered an apology in English and said they intended "no malice" but referred to their apology for further comment.
