Kansas City voters have approved extending the city's 1% earnings tax, allowing it to remain a major source of funding for core services such as police, fire protection, road maintenance and infrastructure. The tax, which applies to people who live or work in Kansas City and makes up a significant share of the city’s general fund, was overwhelmingly voted to continue. If voters had rejected the measure, the tax would have been phased out over the next decade. The earnings tax has been in place for decades and has been supported by voters in 2011, 2016 and 2021. Critics argued that the tax disproportionately affects lower-income workers and places a heavier burden on those with lower incomes and can push people and businesses outside city limits.
