President Trump has stated that he will not sign any legislation until the SAVE Act is passed, a move reminiscent of the Enabling Act for Hitler and his Nazi counterparts in Germany. The bill will disenfranchise millions of Americans, mostly women and people of color, and will also require states to regularly hand over sensitive voter rolls to the Department of Homeland Security. This is seen as an escalation in the effort to pass the bill. The Republican Congress has caved to Trump, acting more like court jesters than their constitutional responsibilities. The president and congress should use their authority to expand democracy, not restrict it as authoritarian kings and dictators do.
