The UK housing charity Shelter has released the first figures from its Women's Rough Sleeping Census in 2025, which identified 144 women in Newcastle who had experienced homelessness or had no safe place to stay during the past three months. The study, conducted in collaboration with the council, aims to help local authorities understand the true scale of women's homelessness in their area. Volunteers search for homeless women at various locations, such as hospital toilets, train stations, and restaurants. The numbers were higher than anticipated and Newcastle City Council may have to adjust the number of beds and hostel places for women.
