NASA's Curiosity rover has discovered a strange texture patterning rocks on Mars' surface, Antofagasta, making it feel like a reptilian scale. Project scientist Abigail Fraeman of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, referred to it as "honeycomb-shaped polygons" which number in the thousands. The discovery is so recent that it may take some time before scientists have a better idea about the patterns and how they formed. The patterning appears more extensive than previously, with raised ridges indicating a different process or stage in the process at the time the rocks set up. However, there are some differences between Pontours and Antoffagasta. The mineral composition of the rocks is expected to yield some hints.
