How Derek Trucks Ended Up Playing Jerry Garcia’s $12 Million ‘Tiger’ Guitar

Derek Trucks, former Grateful Dead guitarist, ended up playing Jerry Garcia's $12 Million custom-made guitar named Tiger, named Tiger. The 13.5 pound instrument was designed for Garcia by Alembic Guitars luthier Doug Irwin and sold for $11.56 million on March 12, 2026. The instrument was purchased at Christie's in New York City as part of the Jim Irsay Collection, a multi-day auction featuring hundreds of prized possessions of the late Indianapolis Colts owner, who died in 2025. Despite initial speculation, Trucks confirmed that Tiger does not belong to him but was recently purchased by Chicagoan Bobby Tseitlin, co-founder of Family Guitars, a company that collects historic instruments.
