The Detroit Lions have been criticized for recouping prorated signing bonus money from former All-Pro center Frank Ragnow when he retired with two years remaining on his contract. The decision was confirmed by team president Roy Wood, stating that it's a precedent dating back to Barry Sanders. Ragnow had $3 million in prorrated signing bonus payments remaining from his contract extension he signed in 2021, which included a $6 million signing bonus. The Lions felt Ragnow did not earn the money they felt he had earned with his play. Critics, including former Lions linebacker Alex Anzalone and former Eagles center Jason Kelce, argued that the team's decision to recoup the money was not the player's money but the Lions'.
