The Royal Iris of the Mersey, a ferry that served between Liverpool and the Wirral for 66 years, has been discontinued after its final voyage. The ship is estimated to have transported more than 17 million people since 1960. It was featured in the 1965 film "Ferry Cross the Merse," starring the band Gerry and the Pacemakers. The service was first recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086.
