New York state legislators are proposing the New York Civil Rights Act, which would allow New Yorkers to sue federal officials who have violated their constitutional rights. This move would align with existing civil suits against state and local officials. Despite the fact that federal officers have far more power and ability to violate constitutional rights than their state counterparts, federal law only allows you to file a lawsuit against the latter. This would allow individuals to file suit in state court rather than in court. The bill would also address the issue of overly aggressive ICE agents who have detained people in a racially discriminatory manner.
