Senegal lawmakers approve new bill toughening punishment for homosexual acts

Sen. Senegal's parliament has approved a law that significantly increases punishment for homosexuality, which defines it as being "against nature". The law doubles the prison sentence for those convicted from one to five years to between five and 10 years. It also punishes those who accuse someone of homosexual acts without proof. The law was introduced by Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and has been supported by groups promoting Islamic values.
