The Trump administration is set to offer leases to oil and gas companies in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, angering critics who predict that efforts to drill there will face court challenges. The Bureau of Land Management announced that it will sell leases for tracts in the refuge's 1.6-million-acre coastal plain. The leases will be opened in June following a recent lease sale in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska, which saw heavy interest from oil companies. The agency did not specify what tracts would be available for bidding. Critics argue that drilling in this refuge could threaten subsistence hunting, wildlife such as polar bears, and the environment. The only lease-holder currently is the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority.
