San Mateo's City Council has approved a new housing project, Gateway at 668 E. 3rd Ave. near downtown San Mateo, allowing the construction of an eight-story residential building with 128 units, including 20 designated for affordable housing. The project was approved through a state law allowing developers to build taller and denser than local zoning allows in exchange for setting aside a portion of units as affordable housing, which was made possible through state law. The 128 units will include 89 one-bedroom apartments, 33 two-bedrooms, five three-bedroomrooms, and a single studio. Despite some opposition, the project still requires permitting before construction can begin.
