Maine housing advocates applaud court decision banning restrictions on homelessness funding

A U.S. Appeals Court has rejected a federal government attempt to impose restrictions on housing funds that help over a thousand homeless people in Maine stay in stable housing. The funds, which primarily come from the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Continuum of Care program, were significantly reduced last year by two notices restricting the eligibility, amount and type of services for those experiencing homelessness. The court rejected the federal government's request to temporarily allow these restrictions to go into effect. The ruling means Maine will receive another year of funding, but it adds instability to an already precarious homeless response system.
