Scott Maxwell's March 29 column suggested that Florida state senators and representatives should receive a pay increase from $29,697 per year. This suggests that only the wealthiest Floridians can afford these "part-time" jobs. However, a Florida circuit court judge, who earns approximately $185,000 per year, is a reasonable benchmark for a qualified, nonmillionaire to take the job. This comparison is blasphemous and distorts the Gospel by comparing the suffering of Jesus to political leaders.
