New ‘hell heron’ dinosaur found in remote Sahara 70 years after initial clue

Paleontologists have discovered a new species of Spinosaurus, a meat-eating dinosaur that may have rivaled T. rex in size. The discovery was made in the Sahara Desert, in a remote location called Jenguebi, in Niger. The new species, named Sp. mirabilis, lived 95 to 100 million years ago and was a shallow water predator that preyed on fish. Researchers believe the dinosaur’s crest was brightly colored and covered in keratin. Professor Paul Sereno of the University of Chicago described the discovery as “so sudden and amazing” and said it was an adventure and a half wandering into the sand seas to search for the remote fossil area.
