Artificial intelligence (AI) has placed us on the verge of a Fourth Industrial Revolution, according to author Tim Pawlenty. He argues that AI could disrupt the white-collar work that made India a tech powerhouse and the country must adapt before it's too late. The company Anthropic recently found high worker vulnerability in the fields of computer programing, customer service, record keeping, market analysis, sales, investment advice, IT security, architecture, law, accounting, engineering and the production of media and entertainment content. The author suggests that the coming AI disruption will be life-altering for millions of Americans, with predictions that unemployment in AI-exposed occupations could reach 6-10%. He also suggests rapid and nimble retraining, allowing displaced workers to pivot into new careers within 12 months or less, and employers engaging in mass AI-induced layoffs to offer transition support. The article also suggests that government leaders must develop a better understanding of AI issues and reform government institutions to address them before it is too late, and demand more from businesses that benefit from using AI at the expense of workers.
