Ross McClean, a Northern Irish director, has released his debut feature, "Magilligan," which follows the story of former inmate Ryan Craig, who spent most of his adult life in a young offenders' prison after committing violent crime. The film, named after the prison where Craig spent the best part of a decade after committing a violent crime, explores how difficult it is to break away from family and environment. McClean first met Craig while shooting his short film "Hydebank" at the young offenders’ facility of the same name. The director used landscapes to reflect Ryan's internal state, with the prison offering a structure where Ryan finds community and purpose. Despite expectations such as housing, employment and stability, McClean believes the film will move beyond the festival circuit and open up wider discussions around incarceration.
