NASA's Perseverance rover has found tiny gemstones that resemble rubies on Mars for the first time. The discovery was made by an international group of researchers at the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in Texas. The team used the rover's SuperCam to examine the rocks' chemical composition and their traces of corundum, a crystalline material known as ruby or sapphire. The findings suggest that Mars may be hiding other precious minerals in its desert-like terrain. The tiny gems were so small that it is difficult to determine their chemical composition. The researchers believe meteorite impacts on Mars may have been the cause for the rubies.
