California officials have established a 77-square-mile quarantine in parts of San Diego County after Mexican fruit flies were discovered during a routine inspection. The quarantine affects Spring Valley, Bonita, and the cities of El Cajon, La Mesa, and San Diego. The California Department of Food and Agriculture is working to contain the infestation, with measures including releasing sterile male Mexican fruit fly and removing fruit within 100 yards of affected sites.
