Jim Crane, the founder of the Texas Children's Houston Open, is pushing for the Houston Open to become one of the PGA Tour's signature events. The Houston Open set a new attendance record this year and has been supported by the Houston Children's Foundation. Crane believes that becoming one of these Signature Events, tournaments with smaller fields and massive prize money ($20 million purses this season), would elevate the Houston open further. However, sources suggest that the move to a signature event is unlikely to happen next season but a few years down the road is a more realistic target date. The 2026 Houston Open also supports the push to become an elevated event.
