New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has initiated a tenant reach-out series, where he invited tenants to express their grievances about their landlords. The series, dubbed "Rental Ripoff," allows the mayor to begin crafting policy based on these testimonies. Each week, each tenant was asked about issues such as repairs, problems with rats, heat, deceptive fees from landlords, and ICE-related harassment in buildings. The Mayor’s Office of Tenant Protection, along with other agencies, will produce a joint report within 90 days of the hearings showcasing common themes they learned from tenants. The hearings were led by Mammani's Director, Cea Weaver, who infamously claimed that "Homeownership is a tool of white supremacy".
