The anniversary of Bethany's disappearance coincides with the kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie, whose remains have not been seen since the third month of the search. Carter, who established a Missing Children’s Day in Tennessee, expressed her heartbreak for the Guthrie family and for the thousands of families whose stories never make headlines. Dr. Pauline Boss, a pioneering family therapist who has spent nearly 50 years counseling families whose loved ones are missing, described the anguish felt by those left behind as “ambiguous loss” and described it as a different kind of pain. There are over 25,000 active missing person’S cases in the United States, with nearly 40% of cases remaining open for over 20 years.
