The Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union has demanded that tube drivers would be paid more than surgeons under demands put forward by unions. The RMT union wants its drivers to work a maximum of 32 hours a week, equivalent to £43 per hour. This would put their pay above financial directors and specialist doctors. Last year, the average London Underground driver was paid £71,160 a year. Unions have demanded that their weekly hours fall from 36 hours to 32 hours to accommodate the shift to a four-day week, while pay remains the same. The London Underground is strongly opposed to moving to a 32-hour working week, which is seen as unfeasible.
