The University ofUtah athletic director, Mark Harlan, stated that Whittingingham's involvement with recruiting players, coaches and staff to Michigan was contrary to the terms of his employment agreement, which requires him to assist with a smooth transition of the football program. Despite efforts to secure a new deal for Whitingham to return to the university, the two sides were unable to reach an agreement.
