The author of the Salt Lake City School District bond that funded the construction of the new West High School, a major investment in students' education and the city's future. The author argues that artificial intelligence (AI) is already transforming the world our children will enter as adults, changing how doctors diagnose illnesses, businesses operate, how engineers design systems and how people create art, write code and solve complex problems. For students, understanding AI will become a fundamental part of their education, with schools treating AI fluency as a basic form of literacy. The Utah State Board of Education has begun developing guidance for schools on the responsible use of AI technology, and teachers across the state are experimenting with AI tools in classrooms. However, if not careful, AI could widen inequality, this could lead to differences in educational and economic opportunity. Technology companies should play a significant role in building safeguards for AI, especially for young people, but this is not enough for a technology that operates across borders and affects every American community. The authors suggest that a clear national framework for AI governance should be established to protect safety, privacy and transparency while encouraging innovation.
