Brazil's Top Court Blocks Senate Probe Into Its Own Member

Brazil's Supreme Court has blocked a Senate investigation into its own member, Justice Gilmar Mendes, who used a three-year-old archived lawsuit to reach a specific judge. Critics argue that this move bypasses random case assignment and bypasses the process of case assignment. Toffoli, who is a partner in Maridt Participações, had just stepped down as judge in the same banking fraud case. The Senate's Organized Crime Committee voted to access Mariddt’s banking, tax, phone, and digital records from 2022 to 2026. Two days later, Mendes annulled the order, ruling that the committee had exceeded its mandate by probing a financial transaction with no proven connection to criminal organizations. The outcome of this case will determine whether any branch can effectively investigate Brazil's highest court.
