Hern Senate bid sparks House GOP leadership scramble

Rep. Kevin Hern (R-Okla) is the first lawmaker to announce he is running for the Senate, running for Markwayne Mullin's seat after President Trump's nomination as Homeland Security secretary. Per House rules, Hern must resign from his position as chair of the Republican Policy Committee, opening up a coveted slot in the conference. No other Republicans have yet announced campaigns for the position. The appointee to replace Mullin must sign an affidavit pledging not to run in the subsequent election.
