This N.J. county could be home to the state’s next nuclear reactor, governor says

New Jersey is considering potential locations for new nuclear facilities amid high electricity prices and strain on the power grid. The state is looking at sites in Salem County near the existing Salem Nuclear Power Plant, Lower Alloways Creek Township, which is one of only six preapproved sites in the nation designated for new projects. The governor, Mikie Sherrill, stated that she does not anticipate any local opposition to nuclear power in the area. The new nuclear sites could help meet increasing demand for utilities fueled by a surge in artificial intelligence data centers. However, proposals for AI data centers have become increasingly controversial in towns across the state. Critics have raised concerns about nuclear waste disposal and storage of spent nuclear fuel.
