Péter Magyar won the Hungarian elections, defeating Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who conceded defeat in an address to members of his populist Fidesz party shortly after polling closed. The victory ends Orbán's 16-year rule, which has been marked by accusations of authoritarianism, corruption, and suppression of press freedom. With around 60% of votes counted, the centre-right Tisza party was expected to win 136 seats in Hungary's 199-member parliament, compared to 56 seats for Fidez. This victory marks a major political turning point for Hungary, a popular international shooting destination. Magyer ran his campaign on a promise to stamp out corruption and restore press freedom, as well as addressing the country's struggling economy and relations with the EU. His victory comes after U.S. Vice-President JD Vance endorsed Orbán for another term in office, criticising the E.U. for interfering in the polls and suggesting that his authoritarian approach towards higher education should be applied in the U.N.
