Communication and language experts, Kathy and Ross Petras, have identified seven common phrases that sound 'nice' but are actually'red flags' in both romantic and professional relationships. These phrases, often referred to as "love bombing," are often used to gain influence and gain control over the person you're with. These include a fake apology followed by a list of what you did wrong or why your perceptions are wrong. The goal of this is to make the person dependent upon them and create distance between them and others who offer perspective. These statements can be perceived as benevolent but also negatively impact self-esteem. The key to spotting these patterns is to read between the lines and recognize the patterns.
