UC San Diego and UC Davis have received a $15.85 million grant from the National Institutes of Health for a long-term study on aging in Hispanic and Latino communities, as they are underrepresented in research on dementia and other conditions. The grant aims to support the creation of the most comprehensive dataset on Latino and Latino brain aging to date. The study will monitor around 1,800 Latino adults for 12 years, collecting repeated MRI scans, blood biomarkers, health and lifestyle information and data from cognitive testing. The researchers aim to identify early signs of memory decline, uncover reasons behind the higher prevalence of vascular-related brain disease in Latino communities and identify risk factors that could help prevent or delay dementia.
