A study by a Lithuanian research team has found that menstrual blood could be a key source for treating the over 600 million people living with osteoarthritis. The researchers used extracellular vesicles from menstrual blood to stimulate cartilage repair, which improved cartilage cell function and decreased tissue degradation. However, the extrecellularvesicles need additional support to prolong their effects and improve treatment outcomes. This led the researchers to use biological scaffolds to protect these extrecesicles and release them gradually when the joint is under pressure or in motion. This could potentially be a non-invasive procedure, as opposed to collecting bone marrow cells.
