The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has revealed that two drivers in 2024 fatal crashes using Ford's BlueCruise hands-free driving system were likely distracted before impact. The NTSB will hold a public hearing in Washington D.C. to discuss the findings and issue recommendations to Ford. The crashes were investigated by the NTSB and by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which upgraded the probe in 2025 and sent Ford an extensive list of questions. The company maintains that Bluecruise is a convenience feature and warns drivers that it is not a crash warning or avoidance system. New information reveals that the Ford’s camera-based driver monitoring system registered the driver as looking at the main infotainment screen in the five seconds before the crash, but only detected him looking at it for a few fractions of a second.
