The U.S. housing supply gap in 2025 widened further, according to Realtor.com's report, with an estimated 4.03 million homes created from 3.80 million in 2024, and 1.41 million households formed in 2025, down from 999,000 in 2024. The report suggests that many potential homeowners will remain sidelined from the market due to underbuilding, which has constrained supply, fueled house price inflation and pushed homeownership further out of reach. The shortage of housing affordability has become a key issue ahead of the midterm elections.
