Recruitment poses main problem for German armed forces, says commissioner

Germany's armed forces are facing a recruitment crisis, according to Parliamentary Commissioner for the Armed Forces, Henning Otte. This comes as Chancellor Friedrich Merz aims to rebuild the Bundeswehr into Europe's strongest conventional army. Otte warned that a return to conscription could occur if voluntary service is insufficient. Germany aims to increase its soldiers to 260,000 and double its reservists to 200,000 by 2025.
