Carion capture technology, which can capture carbon emissions from power plants, may be a breakthrough as tech companies try to meet climate goals while competing in the AI race. The technology has long been too expensive, but this could change that. At least five projects across the U.S. are currently being considered to capture carbon dioxide emissions from natural gas plants connected to data centers. These include Google's project in Illinois, another in Nebraska, projects by ExxonMobil and Chevron, and another by Meta that could add the technology. The rise in electricity demand is lifting nearly all energy technology, including natural gas, but also novel tech like fusion and long-term storage. However, the economics of these projects are still tough, with high upfront costs and ongoing federal subsidies.
