Ilia Malinin, the "quad god" from Virginia, won his third consecutive world title at the figure skating world championships, winning by a comfortable margin of 22.73 points. He topped the short program and Saturday's free skate with 329.40 points, topping the free skate. His score would have won gold at the Olympics by 37.82 points. Japan's Yuma Kagiyama and Shun Sato earned silver and bronze with three quadruple jumps each Saturday, repeating their Olympic finishes. Despite a disappointing 15th-place free skate at the Olympic Games, MalinIN returned to dominance in figure skating after a hiatus from the Olympics. He is the youngest man to win a third world title since Russian Alexei Yagudin in 2000 and the second-youngest American to achieve this feat.
